The terms Pool and Billiards have been used interchangeably for hundreds of years. Billiards has evolved from lawn game similar to croquet that was played sometime during the 15th century in Northern Europe, probably in France. It was played indoors with a wooden table that had green cloth to simulate the grass, and a simple barrier was placed around the edges.
The balls were then shoved, rather than struck, with a wooden stick called mace. The word “billiard” came from the French, and either from the word “billiard,” one of the wooden sticks, or “bille,” a ball. Pool was first played with only two balls on a table with six pockets, a hoop similar to a croquet wicket, and an upright stick was used as the target. Sometime during the eighteenth century, the target and hoop gradually vanished, leaving only the billiard balls and the pockets.
Almost all of the information came from the accounts of playing by nobles and royalty. It was also known as the “Noble Game of Billiards” ever since the early ‘s, but there is still evidence that many different people from all walks of life have played pool since its beginning. In , the game was well known enough to the public that William Shakespeare mentioned it in “Anthony and Cleopatra”.
After 75 years, the first book of rules for pool remarked Brittan as “one of the few towns of note that hath not a public billiard table. When a ball laid near a rail, the mace was not convenient to use because of the large head. In this situation, the pool players would turn the mace around and use the handle of the mace to hit the ball.

Ground billiards is a modern term for a family of medieval European lawn games , the original names of which are mostly unknown, played with a long-handled mallet the mace , wooden balls , a hoop the pass , and an upright skittle or pin the king. The game, which at least three cue-sports historians call “the original game of billiards”, : developed into a variety of modern outdoor and indoor games and sports such as croquet , pool , snooker , and carom billiards.
Its relationship to games played on larger fields, such as hockey , golf , and bat-and-ball games , is more speculative. As a broader classification, the term is sometimes applied to games dating back to classical antiquity that are attested via difficult-to-interpret ancient artworks and rare surviving gaming artifacts. Dating back to at least the 15th century as a tabletop game, : : 5 and in recognizable form to as early as the 14th, : 4 this proto-billiards game appears to have been ancestral to croquet 19th century , trucco 17th century; also known as trucks or lawn billiards , pall-mall [a] 16th century , jeu de mail 15th century , and indoor cue sports 15th century if not earlier — what is usually meant by billiards today.
The location of origin is obscure, with various scholars tracing it to medieval France , Italy , Spain , England, Germany , or more than one of these areas. More exotic and earlier origins have also been proposed. Even in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, indoor billiards was essentially the same game, with smaller equipment and played on a bounded table, with or without pockets. Some later stick-and-ball games, including cricket , also evolved multiple pin targets over time.
Ground and table billiards were played contemporaneously, : 36 and the outdoor version remained known until at least the beginning of the 19th century; : 4 derived lawn games like croquet continue to the present day. The game’s relationships to bowling , golf , hockey , and bat-and-ball games are not entirely certain. It is clear that bowling, in its ancestral form of skittles , shares a common origin with ground billiards, as the two game types share both the basic objective, to direct a rolling ball towards one or more targets, and similar equipment, aside from the mace.

Apart from the fact that we heard earlier that a certain Irish King seemed to use Billiard Balls of brass, throughout most of the time that the game of Billiards has existed the balls were made of Ivory. Composition Balls are of comparatively recent introduction. The use of Ivory for making Billiard Balls during the 19th Century created a very considerable business in the importation of Ivory, principally through the London and Liverpool Docks, and quoting from the Encyclopaedia Britannica the following quantities are given as typical importations In the year – 8, cwt tonne , and finally in the year – nearly 15, cwt.
From this date forwards the quantities decline rapidly, which seems to indicate that Composition Balls were probably introduced towards the end of the 19th Century. At any rate by the quantity imported had declined to 11, cwt. From the information I have gathered by perusing very old catalogues published Mr Messrs. Billiard Balls required the highest possible quality, and of the varieties available described as hard or soft etc, it seems that the soft quality was considered to be the best.
Thus from the Ivory provided by one Elephant only 2 good quality sets of Ivory Balls could be obtained, and it would take 4 elephants to provide enough Ivory for a set of Snooker Balls. The following page from an old Thurston catalogue gives quite a lot of information concerning ivory balls and the necessary procedures concerning selection etc. It is on record that some 12, Elephants were slaughtered each year in order to supply Britain with Billiard Balls.
Also from an old Thurston catalogue mention of Bonzoline balls as being ‘similar’ to Ivory.
